Larry you are correct.  Mrs. Ruby Hughes taught 4th  at Mitchell.  Her sister, Minnie Raymond, was Principal at Holdeman for several year.  Their maiden name was Laird (Drugstore).  Mrs. Hughes daughter, Elna Rae Pohlman, taught 4th grade at Mitchell when we were 6th graders.  There are streets named after them in west Tempe.  Do you remember lpearning to square dance in 4th grade?  I am pretty sure all 4 classes of 4th graders participated.

Mrs Hughes taught 4th grade at Holdeman in 1968-1969. She was a big pain. Mrs. raymond was even worse.................

Mitchell School was the greatest school I ever attended. Mrs Well Kindergarten class...........Unfortunately, we moved into Holdeman district & I got stuck with the likes of Cummins, Gildea, Sample & Hughes, Not to mention, Minnie Raymond. I guess the name Laird went to her head, What these women were, I cannot repeat in mixed company. Suffice it to say, they ruined my school experience for the rest of my life.

Really fun to finally get back to the website and read all the posts from all of you guys. I remember learning the square dancing, too. And the Music Memory program that had some of us going into the big city of Phoenix for further competition at the Westward Ho. And the spelling bees--we had that, right? And the polio vaccinations in that teeny tiny room. Was it the Salk vaccine? How about playing marbles? And jumping out of the swings, which I don't think we were supposed to do. And jump roping. Oh yeah, I remember summer recreation, too, especially the archery, not that I was good, but because it was so different.
