I just read luckiest guy at Tempe high and brought back so many memories.
Just wonder who are natives of Arizona I was born at Mesa South Side Hospital in 1951, Dr. Payne (sp) delivered me. Good name for a doctor.
Tommy
I was not born in Tempe. But married into an old Tempe family. Dr. Payne was there Doc for a long time. But I think their main Doc was Dr. Gilliand. Does anyone know for sure
Tommy, count me in born at Tempe Community Hospital delivered by Dr. Phole. He delivered all my brothers and sisters. Was the only family Doc we had and his son took over his practice when he retired.
Great subject, and I've often wondered the same thing. Then I started doing genealogy and began to understand how Arizona was settled and by whom, when, etc.
I was born in Phoenix at Old St. Joe's in Aug. 1951. My mother was born in Morenci in July 1932. Her dad was the baker in Clifton, the town down the hill. He was also a rancher and my sisters and I spent summers at our grandfather's ranch on Upper Eagle Creek. I never became a bone fide cowgirl like Vickie and Nancy, but there were summers I was saddling up or feeding calves. I now think of those times as the best part of being an Arizona native. I have attached a picture of Joanne and me the summer of 1962, the month before we moved to Tempe, standing in front of my grandpa's feed shed. The two boys with us were my grandpa's hired hands that summer, Warren and Lee Dunagan.
I was Born at Mesa South Side by Doc Payne in 1951. I remember Susan Payne, one of his Daughters was in Concert Choir. He was a busy Doctor {: huh? And this isn't done yet.
I was born at Good Samaritan. Again, Dr. Payne assisted. My father, his father, and my mother are all Arizona natives. Both of my kids went to Broadmor and McKemy. My son was a 4th generation Tempe High grad. My daughter broke tradition and went to McClintock.
Jerry,
Neither Ed nor I are natives. He was born in Indiana, and moved here Frosh year. Since his Dad was a preacher, they moved allot as kids. I was born in Ill., and moved here in first grade (because one of my sisters had asthma). Patty Watts and I became fast friends. We had Mrs. Martin in 2nd grade and got our nuckles wacked a couple of times for talking, I think. Anybody else have her? I remember the whole class going to her farm at Christmas. We sat on the floor by her tree and watched as she opened 'gifts' from each of us. I remember some of the gifts were obviously 'used' and she gave the thanks and appreciation for each and every gift. Her farm sat right where Arizona Mills sits now. I can't go by there without thinking of her.
I'm a local yocal born at Tempe Community by Doc Pohle also. Must be why Mike Mills and I are so handsome, Doc hit all the boy babies with a special purty stick. hee hee

pretty sure Doc Gilliland was the Owens Dr
I was born in Bath, New York. Not too far from where Gary Waldeck now lives.
Moved to Tempe in 1956. Lived in the old Whispering Winds Lodge on Apache Blvd. next to the Ox Bow Tavern while my dad looked for work. Dr. Payne was a busy man. He delivered my first son at Mesa Southside in 1972. Mesa Southside was getting pretty shabby by then and I think they tore it down not too long after that. I consider myself almost a native.
I was born in a prison. Well, it is now, anyway. In 1951 it was Castle Air Force Base near Merced, California, and was the largest B-52 base in the world. My dad was in Korea at the time, so my mom had military priveleges. They charged her $9.50, but wouldn't give her my baby bracelet.
We moved to Tucson when I was four, then up to Tempe for third grade with Mrs. Clark at Broadmor.

Did your dad work as a Tempe policeman for a short time? I heard someone mention Matoon a few weeks ago.
Diane,
I was also in Mrs. Martin's class. I remember that trip to her farm.
Hi Kelly,
I thought maybe you were.
Since I wrote the first email, I've remembered the used gift. It was a half used bottle of perfume. Do you remember that? Mrs. Martin didn't even break stride, of course, and thanked the boy just like she had thanked everyone else for their gifts. It made such a take with me as the only gifts I had ever gotten were new in all my 7 or 8 years.
I was born at Mesa Southside Hospital and deliverd by Dr. Phole, in 1951.
I went to Broadmor Elementary K thru 6.
K: Mrs. Logan, morning session
1st: I don't remember, all I remember was that she was a Miss and then a Mrs.
2nd: Mrs. Martin (I remember going to her house, too.)
3rd: Mrs. Clark (we wrote and performed on Channel 8, 'The Flower' Shirley Keisow was the Flower and I played the xylaphone, while the entire class sang 'Look at me, look at me, I was a seed and now I am a flower.') We planted a garden, too, and ate what we grew. I just remember the radishes.
4th: Mrs. Gammil who became Mrs. Greybill or vice versa($th grade was when we could play on the 'upper grades playground' Remember playing Jacks in the breezeway. Playing with those troll dolls.
5th: Mr. Bertch, whom Vicki Smith DATED.
6th: Mr. Coffinger, he was great to play dodgeball with us.
7th and 8th McKemey-I and several others got in trouble for stealing a bunch of combination locks and then trying to dump them by flushing them down the girls restroom toilets. Diane, was it in Jr High or High School that we got in trouble for talking too much in some math class? I think it was Mr. Wernes. We watched the mail for the progress slips and destroyed them before our parents could see them. I think your parents caught you. Then, for some reason Mr. Wernes came to our house to present a slide show for some group of my mother's or brother's. I was mortified. Oh, one more thing I need to confess to my parents' ashes.
THS with you all, then
ASU with many of you. Went through college of Nursing with Vicki Smith, Diane Hull, and roomed with Genie Davis and Vicki. Genie and I were asked to move out of the dorm because of her 'Saltine Queen Episode', plus a few other antics.
After graduation I followed 'my love' to California and started working, then married. (probably too much information) After 30 years, I moved to Payson, back to my roots, but I will probably be moving back to California soon for family and career. I plan on attending the reunion and the internet goes everywhere, so you will never get rid of me.
Did your dad work as a Tempe policeman for a short time? I heard someone mention Matoon a few weeks ago.
Hi Bill,
Yes, my dad was on the Tempe Police force for several years during the fifties. If I remember right they only had 2 squad cars when he started and only one way radios. They would get a call but would have to use a phone to call back in to the dispatch. I have quite a few news clippings with his name or picture that were in the Tempe Daily News. I also have a lighter that has all the names of the men on the force at the time that they gave to him when he quit . My brother Steve was also a policeman for a few years, but that was in San Francisco.

Nancy,
I remember when Steve was on SFPD. I'd love to see the old clippings. Can you scan them and send them to me? I know some old timers who'd get a bang out of them.
Gail, (and Tom)
It sounds vaguely familiar in Mr. Wearne's class. I just remember if I didn't get a particular grade, I was going to be 'benched' from cheer. Yes, I probably got caught by my parents disposing of the evidence and was grounded. Fortunately, most of my grounding took place in Jr.Hi. If Tom Watley hadn't sat behind me in class and helped me, I never would have gotten the grade I needed. A long overdue (40yrs.)'thanks' goes out to you, Tom.
Gail that was a lot of memories bubbling up for ya. Wow!
Speaking of Mr. Werne. Two of his kids (adults) live here in Payson. Will (son) and Rose (daughter).
Rose's husband owns the Legacy Furniture Store. Will used to work there. Not sure if he still does. Rose is now a nurse @ the hospital. I think she had 8 children!!!
I think they were pretty close with the Sam Fees family.
Man, Mesa Southside was a hoppin place in '51!!! Talk about a baby boom! I was born there in Sept. Same day as Christy Todd Kerr. I'm 4th generation Arizonan. Family has always been in the cattle and farming business.Great great grandpa was a doctor in Buckeye/Palo Verde area, killed when his horse bolted and rolled the buggy over on him.
Was your great, great grandfather's name Evan too? I have lived around Buckeye off/on since 1970 and know quite a few of the old pioneers here.
Jerry and Christy live out here too. I was born the same day in Sept. as Jerry, but I was born in Minneapolis. We moved to Tempe when I was 8 -- feel almost like a native!

Phyllis,
Loved the picture of you, Joanne and the ranch hands. I wouldn't have recognized you from the picture, but Joanne looks just like I remember her when I met her in 6th grade at Broadmor.
Good topic, Tom. It's interesting finding out everybody's history.
Glad you liked the picture! Joanne is still taller and bigger than me in this picture, but that changed when I grew 4' during our 1st year in Tempe and Joanne didn't. My mother said I was going through an akward phase, but it seemed to me it lasted for about 5 years. I look back on this picture and see myself on the cusp of change. Still a child, though...
Carol, yes he was an Evans, James Poole to be exact. Buried in Palo Verde Cemetary. However, there aren't any Evans' left over there. Spread out over the valley.
I do have cousins there though. The Haydens. They've been in Buckeye forever. My grandma Evans was a Hayden and their farm was in Scottsdale just east of Scottsdale Rd.
You guessed it, Hayden Rd was named for her family.
