Anybody out there from those two classes? I played tether ball and baseball with Gloria Jones and Ronnie Acedo and Bobby Rivas and scads of other kids. I remember the party at Marsha Blumenthal's, and the jacks tournaments in the breezeway. And Louis Schmidt and I discussing Twilight Zone episodes every week by phone after the show. Oh yeah, and we'd all get to watch the World Series in class! And some of us went to Mr. Tatum's (?) for reading. Although I was only there for three years (3rd grade with Mrs. Iaquinto), those years comprised the best all-around school experience for me until high school.
I'm not 100% positive, but I believe I was in Mrs. Scales 4th grade class. I'm pretty sure anyway. The old memory banks keep getting fuzzier and fuzzier as time goes on. Like a lot of us kids at Mitchell, I remember playing tetherball. I also remember playing kickball and basketball. I think I even played jacks in the breezeway once or twice too.
After 4th grade I do know I had Mr. Stone for 5th and Mr. Cox for 6th grade.
The Mitchell School years were such a time of innocense. I could never have imagined then what my life would be like now, 50 years later.
Hi Keven -- had Mr. Stone for 4th grade (with you, Gary), but do remember the jacks tournaments in the breezeway -- so much fun and we were pretty seriously competetive too!
Kevin: I had Mr. Taysom for 4th grade. He still lives in Tempe and he is doing very well. I happened to see him just a few weeks ago. He runs 3-4 mi. three times a week and is an active member of the EVIT Board. I had Mrs. Forbes for 5th grade. Do you remember the two men student teachers we had that year? I think the names were Mr. Guess and Mr. Fetterhoff. I believe I remember Mr. Fetterhoff telling about some type of involvement in the atomic bombings of Japan as a serviceman in the Air Force. Does that ring a bell with you?
I do remember playing tetherball and 4 square and even trying jacks (I sucked).
I think Ted Maish was in Mrs. Scales 4th grade class. I had Mr. Scales for Band 4th thru 6th grade. I think he taught all elementary band district wide. They were both very sweet people. It was good to see your mame on the board.
I went to mitchell 2nd thru 4th. I'm like Gary Waldeck, but I'm
pretty sure I had Mrs Scales. That's when we learned our time
tables. I remember standing in front of class and going through
them. I did rather well as I remember ha!
Wow, thanks for bringing up fun memories Keven. I do remember playing tetherball and baseball with you and the boys. Throughout my school years I always remembered Mrs. Forbes, I thought she was a great teacher.
One of the weird things I remember about Mitchell is the recessed areas in the outside walls where the drinking fountains were located. Right above each fountain in the brick was a dark stain made by kids with greasy hair resting the tops of their heads against the wall.
I also was in Mrs. Scales class. Mike D. is right, she seemed as about as old as anyone could be and still teach! T-ball, softball, and football everyday. All part of the 7 year Mitchell School experience.
I can't remember who in first, I had Smith for second, Jeisy for third, and Taysom for fourth. That's great you ran into Taysom Gary. Both my older sisters had Scales. My mother was disappointed I did not have Scales. Smith was married to the Smith Wood Shop Teacher at THS.

I see Wilberta Smithh occaisionally also. She just celebrated her 90th birthday! She did fall and break her hip a while back, but is doing very well now and is still sharp mentally. She lives a block away from Broadmor School.
I am fairly sure I was in Mrs. Scales 4th grade class but I was in Mr Stone's 5th grade class. I played tetherball almost everyday with Steve Frizell.
Hi Gary, I was in Mr. Stone's 4th grade class too. I played a lot of tetherball also. I have one awful memory of 4th grade. I had begged my Mom for one of those slips that make your skirt stand way out -- crinolin or can-can. Anyway, someone of you boys sat on my skirt (think it may have been Steve) out on the playground and when I got up to run away, the whole slip unraveled! The boys thought it was hysterical! I stood outside of Mr. Stone's room half the afternoon because I was too embarrassed to come into class. Mr. Stone kindly wrapped the slip up in newspapers and threatened everyone not to laugh at me. Mom was so mad at me, she wouldn't fix it for months. This is a little bit of trivia -- prob. more than you wanted to know. Just wondering if it was premeditated. Been wondering for years who I have to thank for that, lol! and one of my top embar. moments! You're prob. sorry you mentioned you were in Mr. Stone's class! ha! Thanks for joining in.

I don't remember your slip disaster but I can assure you of one thing. If it was me that sat on your skirt and caused your slip to unravel it was definitely NOT intentional. In fact, if it was me, I was probably just as embarrassed about it. I certainly wouldn't want to be remembered as the cause of your WORST 4th grade memory. SORRY!!!

Thank you for the apology that you bore for 'someone'. I was really embar., but this was written in jest as most of the posts are. This message board brings up many memories. I think it's very cathartic. I enjoyed tetherball because I was pretty tall at that point and could keep it above everyone's head! We all did have a lot of fun, didn't we?

This is the first time I've posted something, but when I saw all the chatter about Mitchell School and Mrs. Scales, I had to respond. I had Mrs. Scales in 4th, who did seem old at the time, and Mr. Scales for band. I remember a lot of you in class, and have a class picture somewhere, but can't find it right now. Of course we played tether ball and stayed in the cool, dark breezeway for jacks at recess and lunch. I had Mrs. Gillette for 1st, Mrs. Miller for 2nd, Mrs. Pollock for 3rd, Mrs. Scales, Mr. Taysum (sp?) for 5th, and the Texan, Mrs. Campbell for 6th, who taught us a very interesting pronounciation of Spanish. The walk to and from school was always interesting and seemed to include boys throwing pomegranites at everyone. I also remember walking to school in the summer for arts and crafts, archery and other fun stuff and having contests to see who could stand the longest, barefoot on the pavement. A long time ago......

I was called 'Shackel-Chevy' a lot, among many other things....but not often 'cute'. I remember that my family always said I looked like a waif! So there you go.

Was there a Mrs. Hughes who taught 4th grade? If so, that's who I had. She had a student teacher with her the second half of the year, and both teachers were really nice. Every day after lunch they'd read us 'Charlottes' Web'. Lynn Cunningham was in the class, and I thought Gary Trimeloni was, too.
Larry you are correct. Mrs. Ruby Hughes taught 4th at Mitchell. Her sister, Minnie Raymond, was Principal at Holdeman for several year. Their maiden name was Laird (Drugstore). Mrs. Hughes daughter, Elna Rae Pohlman, taught 4th grade at Mitchell when we were 6th graders. There are streets named after them in west Tempe. Do you remember lpearning to square dance in 4th grade? I am pretty sure all 4 classes of 4th graders participated.
It had to happen..............someone had to remind me of the square dancing in 4th grade. I am sure my embarrasment from that torture caused me to hate country music and for many years dancing. Thanks Patton! LOL.
I do not remember that class Larry but then the 60's brought me a lot of brain damage.....well maybe it was i did in the 60's that was the culprit.
There is a school named after Mr. and Mrs. Scales, it’s located at 5th and Beck. I am not sure about this but I think it’s the current edition of Payne Training
