Anyone have information on our deceased classmates?  I have info on some, but am curious about Kent Schafer, Paul Cherry, and Marguerite Baird.

Thanks

I have gathered birth snd death dates for each of our deceased classmates.  I have tried to locate the actual obituaries but without paying, have only been able to find Dennis Friestad's.  If you would like me to post or send them somewhere, let me know.

Larry,
Charlie Cherry, 'Paul Cherry's' brother was in the Mesa Community College Choir with me, see attatch jpg. he is the good looking guy next to the old bearded  guy. If you can find his phone number, I will be happy to call him. Also, even though he did not graduate with us, I have notius several message board comments about him, Louis Franco 'Dino' I will also be able to shed some light on his passing.

I think Mike Vance would know better than I about Paul Cherry.  Paul and Vicki moved their family to Missouri.  Had several adopted children. Paul was an administrator or superintendant of a private academy.  Also had responsibilities in the church that ran the school.  I don't remember if it was a heart attack or anurism that took him.  Tragically left a beautiful family.  If anyone has better or more accurate info, please correct me.
What a fun guy Paul was.  I remember when we were about 13 or 14, I had a brand new suit that I wore to church.  Well, back then we (Mike Vance, Kim Standage, Russ Barnes,Paul, Mike Arnow, Ray Taylor, and others) would go to Campus Drug or somewhere else to eat breakfast.  The day I first wore my new suit, we went to Burger Chef. Paul being Paul thought it cute to smash packets of catsup with his fist on the tables.  Guess who got squirted?  I was pretty mad about that prank.  But that was Paul and we all loved him.  Didn't he used to go by Arnold or Arnie?

A couple of years ago I was in somewhat regular contact with Kent Shaffer.  I had run across him on 'Classmates'.  He was very sick even then and said it was primarily from a very unhealthy lifstyle.  He was not really specific but I could tell from our emails he was not long for this world and he seemed to know it but was at peace.  I saw on the THS original website he had passed and that was the last I heard.

A sad page. Wasn't Margarite Baird a neighbor/girlfriend to Dennis Friestad years before High School. I used to go over to Dennis's years back and remember her being there. Margarite Baird also used to come watch us practice Baseball in the Park behind Circle K and Tempe Sales on Broadway. I remember Paul Cherry to be a very up person and fun to be around. Kent Schafers laugh used to crack me up, he was fun to hang out with, mostly pre THS. I am glad Gary Trimiloni had this time with Kent to Share.

Thanks

Marguerite Baird grew up down the street from me, caddy corner across the street from Marcene Follett, across the street from Mark Kypers, next door to Dottie Jordan, on West 17th Place.  Marcene Follett and I were probably her most frequent playmates growing up.  Her mother was our Brownie Leader when we were in 2nd-3rd grade.(Who else was in that troop? Maybe, Brenda Force?)  I remember bridging (right term?) to Girl Scout in Marguerite's backyard.  Marguerite was always quiet and happy to have friends come to play with her.  She would come to play at our houses, and I can still hear her mother's voice calling her home.  It was very distinctive!! (Rising in pitch and volume - Marguereeeeeeeeeeeet!  It would make sense that she would have watched ball practice at Clark Park, as it was just at the end of the street.  It is my recollection that her parents, her brother Clifford (class of '64 or'65 I think), and her parents all passed away within a few years of each other.

Thanks Carol for remembering, I'm well and doing fine.  40 years is a long time and to make this short, I live in Scottsdale and work for the State of Arizona. The past 40 years are a mystery to me and it would be more fun to talk in person.  I do not express myself very well in e-mails but I believe my phone number has been included in my personal information so please give me a call because I would also like to hear what you have done for the past 40 years. By the way I’m just having some fun with the other Tommy.

I am working with Pat Donovan to expand our In Memory section of the website.  As a part of those efforts, I am searching out the obituaries of our deceased classmates.  Last night, I opened Kent Schafer's and was very touched by what I found.  The obituary is lovingly written by a son, and the guest book has many wonderful tributes.  I thought others may like to view the link.  This link has paid access until midnight tonight.  Take a tissue and prepare to be awed.  I was. The link is:
www.legacy.com/Link.asp?I=LS000015835310
If you're not able to access this today, I will include these entries on our In Memory page.
Also, if any of you have information, sentiments, memories, etc. that you would like to include for any of our friends, send it to me.

Judy

I appreciate seeing the notice on Dave Swearingin.  We were friends in high school, I knew he had gone into law enforcement, but had lost track of him.  Sad to see such a stand-up guy leave so young.

Phooey, I missed the link to Kent Schaefer's obit.  I hung out with him when we went to Gililland Jr. High.  I hope someone posts further info.  No matter the years gone past, our '69 group seems young - so many ideas about the world formed in that small amount of time - many proven right, many wrong.  Strangely, I've found that meeting people over the years, I always somehow use the folks from Jr. High and High School as reference points - mostly unconsciously, but, when I think about it, there it always seems to exist.

I agree, Mike.  Anyone who was fortunate enough to have all 4 (or even a few)years in one high school, with such a large graduating class (364?) - these individuals have had a tremendous influence on us, far beyond what we might have expected back then.  While there were no doubt disagreements, different groups, etc. among us, these have faded into the backgroud as if they never were.  I suppose many of us thought that we'd 'move on' after H.S.; that never really happens in the sense that our classmates become part of us, and we hopefully come to appreciate the uniqueness in one and all.  Those are a big four years.  And when one or more leave the scene all too early, there is genuine cause to mourn someone who we discover has always beeen a part of us.

I watch my older grandson, entering 8th grade now, and then in a mere year he'll start that odyssey (yeah, could have spelled it 'odd'ysseyl...) of high school that will, I suspect, brand him for life.  And it'll include the highest highs and the deepest sorrows - how to tell a young person that the day will come when their young friend today may not always be there?  You don't, you just be sure that you're there for them when it happens.

I was totally blown away when I saw Scott Coopers obit! Last I saw Scott, he was flying with AirEvac. Fun, goofy guy Scott was. Had one nice ride in high school too!  Anyone know anymore about his passing? Lived right here in Chandler and didn't know it.  Too sad.

Just saw the posting for Steve Williams in the 'In Memory of' section.  If my memory's correct, Steve married Cathy O'Neil ('71).  I ran into him four or five years after school, and I think he and Cathy had had a little girl by then.  I didn't know Steve well, but when we were talking, I was struck by how friendly he was, and remember thinking that I wished I had gotten to know him better.  Then, about six months later I was shocked to read that he'd died in a freak dirt bike accident over by the north end of the high school.
