I saw the picture Denise posted about jumping rope and noted it was for students who attended Ritter School.
Who knows when Ritter closed? Were all the students incorporated into Broadmor, or did they split them into other schools as well?
When we moved to Tempe in the summer of 1962 I remember being told that Ritter had recently closed, but that if it had stayed active, I would have gone there. I lived just north of the tracks between College and Mill. Anybody know what the boundaries were?
Pat, where did you live when you went to Ritter? And what about you, Denise? Did you live by Daley Park?
Any comments, other than corny jokes from the guys, will be appreciated. And guys, I like your corny jokes, but I'm looking for real info here!
Phyllis: This is not exactly an answer to your question, but in the fall of 1971 (Ithink) TD3 reopened Ritter as a Jr. High. I believe it had been closed for some time. Patton Const. had the renovation contract. We turned the Kindergatren Room and play yard into the Shop facility, added exterior locker pads and remodeled the restrooms. Some 'old Tempe names' were involed in that project: Dail's Welding, Bobby Fortune &Sons Plumbing, Robison Electric (Charlie Robinson --THS '66). It functioned as a Jr. Hi. for 2-3yrs. then ASU took over.
Hi Phyllis... I lived on 14th street at that time with the Zucco's... The jump rope contest was probably in a summer program because I attended Mt. Carmel up through 7th grade.. Went to McKemy in 8th..

I attended Ritter for one year, 1971-1972. Then Connolly Jr. High opened and I went there (it was closer to where I lived, Southern and Country Club). I remember the shop room and lockers, as Gary notes. And the bathrooms! I attended ASU and used to go back to the Ritter Building frequently. (I first learned how to use a computer in the former shop room.) Memories always flooded back...and the bathroom facilities seemed oddly sized! But comforting somehow. I'll never forgive ASU for razing Ritter. Yet another instance of Tempe eating itself...and is it a better city? I think we'd have to agree the answer is no.
