paying jobs during high school

My first paying job that wasn't household chores-related (baby-sitting, ironing) was working part time at PDQ Burger across from Tempe High my senior year. Maybe I had many assigned tasks there, but all I remember is washing dishes in the back. Don't even remember how I found out about the job, or how I got the nerve to interview for it, let alone how much I earned. Am curious to know about what kinds of jobs others of the class of '69 had while at THS--lemme hear from you all!

I worked in the summer cleaning houses & ironing.  One of my clients was the Monti' family.
I had 3 ladies in my neighborhood who's hair I fixed on Saturdays.
I also waited tables at the Beef House, catty corner from THS. Kelly Moeur made the garlic bread. I would walk across the street to the bank & deposit my minimum wage paychecks and spend my tips on clothes.
I also babysat, but only when I didn't have something better to do!

I worked at Revco in Tempe Center with Marsha Sowell.  There was a great old fashioned soda counter.  I made so many ice cream sodas that too this day I am not a fan of ice cream! The pay wasn't great but there were a lot of college boys coming in to shop all the time!

I spent many an hour in the Beefhouse Kitchen.  I remember is was about 140 degrees next to the grills.  I used to go outside in July to cool down.  Diane might have thought that i was nothing but a garlic bread maker, but I had more responsibility than that.  I also put butter in baked potatoes and a piece of parsley on each plate.  It was such specialized work, that I was well paid.  $1.00 per hour.  I finally worked my way up to $1.10 per hour, plus all the Ready Whip I could squirt into my mouth.

I had several jobs.  Sometimes I had 2.  I had paper routes almost continually-- actually had  an AZ Republic route until shortly after graduation.  I kept it that long because I was hoping to get one of their scholarships.  Didn't happen but another of our classmates--Rick Schumm did  get one.
I also worked at Burger Chef with several other members of our class.  Lousy pay--$.90/hr but good burgers, cute college girls, and saw some big fights in the parking lot.  Ialso worked for Saga Foods at Manzanita dorm. I started out washing dishes and worked my way up to cracking eggs for Sunday am. scrambled eggs.  I think it was around 40-50 dozen--done 4 at a time--2 in each hand!
I also worked summers and some Saturdays for my Dad's Const. business (guess what I'm still doing).  It was almost entirely laborers work--haul trash, dig ditches and footings, demo walls and jack hammer out concrete (guess what I'm still doing).  I did not get to do much skilled work until after high school.

I worked for Soggy Foods over at the MU at ASU after school three days a week when I was a sophomore. Set banquet tables, served food, cleared tables, spilled ice water down a woman's back while picking up a butter dish, loaded dishes in the dishwasher downstairs.

Also washed dishes by hand Wednesday nights for the church dinner at First Southern Baptist Church on west 8th Street (before it was renamed). Did wonders for my complexion - a little kid asked me one night if I had the measles. Using Noxema did help, either.

Linda McDonald and I dished out burgers, dogs, and sodas at the ASU football games.
We also worked some banquets, and food buffets for Saga Foods. We worked for a scary German guy named Henry. I also worked at Brads Coffee Shop during my senior year for a while. One time while serving ice water from a pitcher to a table of about 5 people, I reached across the table to get a glass and as I bent forward, I poured ice water down a guys back. He started making squeeky noises, and when I realized what I had done, I started laughing......I didn't last long there.  Boy I just nailed that verification question ;)
